Biodigesters

Grano de Oro, Costa Rica

The project consists of building biodigesters for a very rural community in Grano de Oro, Turrialba, Costa Rica. The biodigester creates methane gas mainly for cooking, and once built, is 100% self-sustaining with farm animal manure (cows & pigs).

This particular project will help at least four families in this rural community. Not only does it provide practically free, ongoing cooking fuel, but it also produces a very potent composting liquid (as a result of the process) that will be very beneficial for their gardens.

The estimated cost per biodigester is $300.

Biodigester progress

So far we have been able to install two biodigesters in Grano de Oro. One is up and running, and the family is using it daily to help with their cooking needs. There have been challenges as we have had to make adjustments, but we and the family are definitely happy with the results.

The second biodigester is installed, but the family still needs to work on filling the bag with water (a logistical challenge considering the location of the biodigester), and making the final connections into their home.
